FAQs

  1. How much weight can a van carry?
Our vehicles have a payload of between 700 kg and 900 kg, depending on the make and model of the vehicle and whether it has a tail lift.
Each vehicle has a sticker showing its payload, and this information is also recorded on the company portal. If you are ever unsure, please contact the office team before loading the vehicle.
  2. How does overtime work?
Overtime is paid at your normal hourly rate of £14.20 per hour.
Overtime is capped at an average of 5 hours per week. This can be averaged over the month. For example, if you work 8 hours of overtime one week and 2 hours the following week, this can be balanced across the month.
If you work more overtime than your allowance, you may be able to take the additional time back as time off in lieu. This must be agreed in advance with the office team.
The overtime limit is in place to help prevent excessive working hours and to ensure employees have sufficient time to rest and maintain a healthy work-life balance.
  3. Can I take equipment home?
No, equipment belonging to iWaste or in iWaste's possession may be taken from the site or a company vehicle. All employees sign a declaration when they join the company confirming that they will not remove equipment without authorisation.
Removing equipment without permission may be treated as theft and could result in disciplinary action and, where appropriate, the matter being reported to the police.
  4. How much manual handling does the role include?
Although the role involves driving long distances, it also includes a significant amount of manual handling when visiting customer sites.
You may be required to lift and manoeuvre equipment such as:
    •  Bins ranging from 120 litres to 1,100 litres
    •  Secure cages
    •  Fridges
    •  Dishwashers
    •  Chairs
    •  Other electrical and office equipment
The role is similar in some respects to working for a removals company. You will need to safely load and secure equipment within the vehicle in accordance with company procedures and government guidelines.
The role can also involve walking up and down stairs, so a reasonable level of fitness is beneficial.
To help reduce the physical demands of the job, we provide lifting aids such as sack barrows and pallet trucks, and employees are expected to use them where appropriate.
  5. What happens if I get stuck in traffic or at a customer site and return after the site's normal working hours?
    Our site is normally open:
    •  Monday to Thursday: 7:00 am to 5:00 pm
    •  Friday: 7:00 am to 4:00 pm
Our aim is always for drivers to return to site well within these hours so that vehicles can be unloaded and prepared for the following day.
However, delays caused by traffic or extended customer visits can occasionally mean that this is not possible. If this happens, you will have access to the necessary codes to enter and leave the site, as well as access to the on-call support team if you need assistance or guidance.
Depending on your workload and the arrangements for the following day, you may either unload the vehicle when you return or securely park it and unload it the next morning.
